Recorded live at the 2017 Vilnius Jazz Festival in Lithuania, this sonic postcard from the reliably inventive trio of Evan Parker, Barry Guy and Paul Lytton comes across as an extended musical conversation in four parts. As usual it is Parker’s circular breathing technique that acts as the portal for the rest of the group to gain access. This works particularly well on the ‘Part II’ where, after a burly tenor blasting from Parker, Guy and Lytton slowly slide through the open gap in the piece to join him. Sounding at first reserved and almost unsure as to how to react alongside each other, the group suddenly bond together in a huge swell of improvised joy. ‘Part III’ opens with Guy’s loosely strung double bass explorations – a real treat for the audience who applaud his solo as he burrows deeper into the wooden belly of his instrument to produce extraordinary sounds. Enhanced by Lytton’s enchanting spidery drum flurries, the spell is finally broken by the return of Parker as the trio gradually reunites (and reignites) for a furiously played finale of white-hot fire music.
