Recorded at the house in Walthamstow where Victorian designer and socialist activist William Morris once lived and worked – and dedicated to the memory of his friend and fellow improviser, guitarist John Russell – this latest solo recording from Evan Parker pays personal tribute to both artists. Deeply embodied within the release is a sense of Morris’ devotion to ancient craft techniques, an element that Parker explores here through his unique playing style, but one that is also illustrated in the Pre– Raphaelite cover art (based on a drawing by Morris) and the choice of cassette tape as one of the album’s formats.

That said, the nine tracks that make up Winns Win are some of Parker’s most exacting work to date, intricately played and seamlessly woven together to form a spontaneous sonic tapestry that is rich in pattern and colour. Embroidered with clusters of looping notes, repeated musical motifs and rasping blats from his instrument, the album embodies a revolutionary spirit similar to that which Morris famously displayed in his work and ideas.
