Gabriel, son of the late Mike, stakes a claim to be his own man with this new quintet album (it’s complemented by a more populist septet session released at the same time), which confirms Garrick as a soloist of genuine quality and a composer of real worth. Aside from the ballad ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is’ and a single holdover from Mike’s pen, the remaining 11 pieces are all by Gabriel (with a single assist from Walker) and present a neat overview of the trumpeter’s tastes and his influences. ‘All Because Of You’ is a latinesque flugel piece which moves nicely before ‘The Answer Is Here’, subdued at first, and then sprightly, its pretty theme taking wing over Nickolls’ rumbling drums, Garrick in peppy form in his solo, as Walker harries the harmonies. Plenty of animation here.
The mood changes with Mike’s lyrical piece ‘Blind Faith’, taken as a duet with the impressive Bartlett matching Garrick for poise ahead of the album standout, the fast-moving ‘Can of Ice’, with Garrick muted in Navarro-like fashion, as Ridley solos and Bartlett splashes out. Here’s the essence of this debut album, the clever juxtaposition of varied materials, treatments and textures, with Garrick flexing his range as he moves beyond the merely reflective into more torrid country, his improvisations gathering pace and intensity. There’s a nice Blue Note feel on ‘Insurance Blues’, the groove solid, with Walker building well in early-Coltrane style. Plenty here to enjoy: go, Gabriel!
