If there's ever any danger of an avant-garde improv unit having teenappeal, then it might just be Gannets that fits the bill. Though sister band to Guillemots, an indie-rock group led by the dashing Fyfe Dangerfield, Gannets pull no punches. It's decidedly “out there” stuff: a fidgety hotchpotch of instant compositions that slam together fl eeting musical references to disorientating effect. That's an aesthetic that suits veteran improv drummer Steve Noble down to the ground, here channelling his hyperactivity into throwaway bursts of jaunty swing, pompous march and sloppy funk. Alex Ward and Chris Cundy's clarinets burble up odd fl ashes of circus music, klezmer, and old-time New Orleans jazz. And Dangerfield's the wild card, chucking in slithers of saloon-bar piano, B-Movie sci-fieffects, seaside Wurlitzer and delicate classical étude as and when the mood grabs him. The result sounds like a chattering menagerie of chimpanzees left to play with a roomful of musical instruments – and having a great deal of fun.
