Burton began recording as an artist in his own right, after stints with George Shearing and Stan Getz, on the RCA Victor label, moving to Atlantic in 1969 and debuting with Throb, released on 4 September 1969. Clearly Atlantic were seeking to differentiate Burton's quartet sound on Victor, which had provided several early classics of jazz-rock. Thus Throb may have been his basic quartet configuration but it had the addition of country violinist Richard Greene. With Good Vibes, Burton's second album for Atlantic recorded in September 1969, it put even greater distance between the Victor sound and Burton's current aspiration. This larger group heads a little more unequivocally into rock/funk territory (including two-thirds of the rhythm section of Stuff with Richard Tee and Eric Gale) with thicker textures and grooves. Both Joel Dorn and Arif Mardin produced ‘Vibrafinger’ and ‘Las Vegas Tango’, suggesting these titles might have been intended for eventual single release, with Dorn producing the rest of the album. One of the lessercommented albums of the period, Burton's sound (on record at least) was clearly in transition, something that was eloquently and successfully resolved with Burton's collaboration with Keith Jarrett four months later.
