This ECM Touchstone reissue from 1973 documents perhaps the least known of Burton's famous quartets, the first of which, with Larry Coryell on guitar, pioneered a route into jazz rock with Duster in 1967. The ‘new quartet’ introduced guitarist Mick Goodrick, who like Burton was now dividing his time between performing and academe since both were then faculty members of the Berklee College of Music. The album also includes the recording debut of Abraham Laboriel, whose elegant virtuosity would see him quickly claimed as a first call session musician, his jazz discography quickly overwhelmed by some 4,000 pop and rock sessions on both the East and West coasts, prompting Guitar Magazine to call him: “The most widely used session bassist of our time.” Interestingly, among the eight titles recorded by Burton are two by Gordon Beck. Overall, this is an album of exceptionally well executed, inspired music making, whose highlights include Carla Bley's ‘Olhos de Gato’ and Mike Gibbs' ‘Nonsequence’. Perhaps inevitably this group would be overshadowed by its successor with Goodrick and Pat Metheny on guitars, Steve Swallow on bass and Bob Moses on drums. Fingers crossed those albums are released on Touchstone sometime soon.
