Released to coincide with Peacock's 80th birthday back in May, this makes a change from both his work with pianist Marilyn Crispell and those endless trios dominated by Keith Jarrett. He's a master bassist, as is well known, but this line-up with Copland and Baron has unlocked a seam of lyricism that's sometimes been comparatively under wraps. He also contributes the majority of the material for these 11 tracks, including such favourites as ‘Gaia’, ‘Moor’, ‘Vignette’ and ‘Requiem’, and their hauntingly simple figures and minimal chord-sequences unveil some pensive and highly collaborative playing from all three participants. Two tunes are credited to Copland and one to Baron, while the one standard item, ‘Gloria's Step’ by Scott LaFaro, differs from the classic Bill Evans version in having bass take the melody, as well as the first solo. All in all, a considerable success and, if you have to create your own birthday present, you could hardly do better than this.
