Norwegian guitarist and exotic instrument hound Geir Sundstøl settles in for a solo sophomore suite mapping out cinematic regions of Mississippi swampland, gumming up snow-coated skerries with sundry American zones. Those who get a kick from Sundstøl's post-Frisellian contributions to recent sides by Nils Petter Molvær will definitely dig this, so too will hardcore advocates of Ry Cooder's soundtrack work on Southern Comfort and Paris, Texas. There's also a Hawaiian strand percolating below several cuts, a distant echo of Mike Cooper's hula-looping adventures on White Shadows In The South Seas. More pluses: outside of Susan Alcorn's captivating Evening Tales you're unlikely to surpass the high-lonesome cries of ‘Røk’ and raga-like recreation of traditional Nordic tune ‘Gråtarslaget’ for contemporary examples of prime pedal-steel playing in jazz-adjusted realms. Meanwhile, Tony's Theme’, from Brian De Palma's Cuban immigrant crisis flick Scarface, gets a surprisingly emotive reworking, a take ditching the disco powder power strut of Giorgio Moroder's original for a consoling dip in burbling geothermic waters. Say hello to my new little friend. He's rather nice.
