The Russian-born, New York resident supplies all the tunes apart from an interpretation of Björk's ‘Hidden Place’. They are pleasing enough with the title tune aptly named for its descending corkscrew melody and ‘Creeper’ sounding like it's equally influenced by Becker and Fagen's chord changes and some prog-rock riffs. ‘Two Sides to Every Story’ reaches out into country rock territory in both composition and the guitarist's playing, and proves to be a real highlight. Segal can do the Scofield skronk and switches nicely from a more expansive tone to a tighter attack when playing in harmony with Charette's Hammond B3 – ‘Creeper’ shows that to fine effect. Cox tends to stay out of the spotlight, providing solid support. Segal mentions in the liner notes his admiration for the scope of organ trios from Larry Young with Grant Green and Elvin Jones across to John Abercrombie's trio. With Spiral Segal he seems to have successfully found his own distinctive niche within that range.
