Who wouldn’t want to spend an hour in the genial company of Geoff Eales? Recorded as a solo celebration for Eales’ 70th, it captures many styles, all unified by the musical vigour which belies his years. It all kicks off with a high-energy, Corea-flavoured ‘Andalucian Affair’.
But then we chill down with the romance of ‘Celtic Roots’, a reminder of Eales’ proud Welsh heritage. By contrast ‘Mardi Gras’ recalls Eales’ happy formative years in New Orleans. The cut's also illumined by Eales’ own poem, delivered in a no holds barred manner by Roughler Jones. Eales’ poems also burst through on the dark chordings of the nightmare evoking ‘Biscay Dipper’ and the decidedly out there ‘Swirlings’. Other stand outs include the impassioned melancholy of ‘Nagasaki Children’. The only cover is the gorgeous Rodgers and Hart ballad ‘Little Girl Blue’. But otherwise we’re treated to the breadth of Eales’ writing whether rocking out on ‘Yarrumbwa’ or full of Eastern promise and melodrama on ‘Mumbai Memory’. Happy belated birthday, Mr Eales!
