Duke has always been the jazz chameleon, able to soul it out with Cannonball Adderley, or fit glove-like with Zappa’s challenges in two differing stints. Zappa indeed repaid the debt by lending idiosyncratic guitar to Feel, suddenly igniting the moonglow pop soul of ‘Love’ with a distorted solo, and likewise on the funk groove of ‘Old Slippers’. From Duke’s point of view, Feel finds himself on well-trodden ground, whether it’s on the lazy-on-a-sundae afternoon groove of the title track or pre-empting ‘Rockit’-era Herbie on ‘Cobra Jobege’. Leon Ndugu Chancler’s (just credited as Ndugu on the sleeve) ‘The Once Over’, is the only break in tone, with Duke laying down colourings to let Chancler’s insistent drums and Airto’s rainforest percussion rule the roost. Feel’s probably the first recording of Duke successfully melding his synths and keys into an almost orchestral wall of sound, which in time would be his signature vibe. The chameleon safe in his own skin, then.
