Gibbs is the son of vibes veteran Terry Gibbs (who'll turn 90 this year) and, coming up through the NYC club Smalls among other outlets, he's released at least five previous albums under his own name, often with larger forces. He also rejoices in the nickname ‘Thrasher’, borrowed apparently from pianist Don Pullen, a former colleague. This 75-minute-long set, with his ‘dream trio’ of Barron and Carter, finds him occasionally being subtle in a rather obvious way, but for the most part pushing intensely. Of course, his playing is high in the mix and the somewhat unrelaxed feeling is emphasised by the fact that all the pre-existing tunes, from ‘Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing’ to Hancock's ‘Eye Of The Hurricane’, are played that bit too fast. There are four Gibbs originals, and one each from his sidemen, but his closing version of ‘The Theme’ in beat-box style is all too short. It would be unthinkable to give less than three stars to anything with Barron or Carter, but they may not be at their best here.
