Whereas, the BBC systematically wiped the tapes of so many vital broadcasts, over on the continent numerous radio stations took great pains to carefully archive their programmes. One such organisation is Südwestrundfunk in Stuttgart, Baden-Baden and Mainz, south west Germany who recently decided to open its vaults to make over 3,000 hours of rare material available for the first time. Back in the early-1950s, such was the impact made by Gerry Mulligan's original shortlived pianoless quartet (featuring Mis'tah Chet) that he had his work cut out trying to meet public expectations. He went some way with Bob Brookmeyer and later Art Farmer before launching his remarkable Concert Jazz Band. Later, a number of much smaller units did far better on the international festival circuit than at record store check outs. Though having lost none of his ability over the passing years, Mulligan's once light-as-a-feather tone deepened into a mature voice reminiscent of Harry Carney while is repertoire also had a distinctive Ducal edge. No complaints there.
