Gil Evans’s son, Miles, now in his fifties, has periodically kept alive the legacy of his father, and specifically of the band that played Monday nights at Sweet Basil in the years before Gil’s death in 1988. That group was mainly documented through live recordings, as is his offspring’s band on YouTube, whereas the present album (announced as the first of three) is its initial studio documentation. Judging by the varying line-ups, there seem to be at least three sessions with around 16 musicians each time, many of them veterans of the 1980s band, and there’s a fine balance between brief ensembles and longer solos with predominantly rock-oriented rhythm-sections. Some of the material was previously recorded, such as Gil’s ‘Moonstruck’ and ‘Eleven’ (originally titled ‘Petits Machins/Little Stuff’) or his arrangement of ‘Lunar Eclipse’, but the remaining four items, including Miles Evans’ ‘LL Funk’, seem to be new to disc. The press release for this album contains a detailed note (some 900 words giving complete arranger and soloist credits) that’s seemingly not included as part of the actual packaging, which would be a distinct loss for interested listeners.
