GSH aficionados will be more than familiar with this, one of the masterworks of his Flying Dutchman period. If Small Talk At 125th And Lenox alerted the world to the talents of a new black poet then this was a quite stupendous calling card for a new black songwriter. It is indeed the artist's great melodic gifts that come to the fore on texts that forgo the proto-rap recital of his debut (apart from the seminal ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’), for verse-chorus structures that draw on the harmonic wealth of soul and jazz. The string of anthems is quite simply jaw-dropping (‘Save The Children’, ‘Lady Day And John Coltrane’, ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is’, ‘I Think I'll Call It Morning’), and vividly reflects the influences of Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye. With co-writer Brian Jackson on board in a crack band anchored by Ron Carter and ‘Pretty’ Purdie the results are timeless. A good bonus comes in the shape of a trio of interesting tracks by Black & Blues, the group GSH was in prior to his solo career.
