Gilberto Gil had to curtail his musical career when he was Brazil's official Minister of Culture. Now, after completing five years in office, the unofficial Minister of Música Popular Brasileira has resumed full-time performing and recording; here, on the live set he's called Bandadois (Band Two) – the follow up to the studio album Banda Larga Cordel – his delight is palpable. Featuring Gil on guitar and vocals, and a little instrumental colour from sons Bem and Jose on guitar, percussion and bass, the album revisits his illustrious back catalogue with easy, laid-back flair. Covers of old tunes such as Jackson do Pandeiro's jaunty ‘Chiclete com Banana’ are given the inimitable Gil stamp; the man's low croon is leftfield cool. He even whistles the melodies when he feels like it. Maria Rita guests huskily on Gil's ‘Amor Até O Fim’, a song her mother Elis Regina sang many years before.
