Originally recorded for the Fontana label in March 1969, Down Another Road was notable for how Collier's compositional tapestries were perfectly balanced – in some cases exceeded – by the outstanding solos of Beckett, Evans, Sulzmann and Jenkins, and how a rather standard front line was imaginatively voiced with strong melodic lines and counter lines contrasted by occasional episodes of collective improvisation and elements drawn from the rising tide of jazz-rock then current to create his own genre within British jazz.
With the exception of the opening track, ‘Burblings For Bob,’ all the tracks from the Fontana album are reproduced at the Stockholm Jazz Days 1969 festival, with ‘Molewrench,’ a feature for Nick Evans on trombone slightly extended, but still including the oasis of calm offered by Karl Jenkins’ oboe solo. The interest of this album is, of course, to hear how the band respond to a live performance, in contrast to the studio environment, with the opportunity of a fresh take if required. If anything, the ensemble are more animated providing an excellent representation of Collier's music for Scandinavian audiences, most of whom would hear this on the radio.
