Taken from the Jon Hiseman tape archive, Group Sounds Four (a broadcast from June 1966 involving Lowther, Dobson, Bruce and Hiseman ) and Group Sounds Five (another broadcast, this time from November 1965 involving Lowther, Dobson, McCarthy, Rubin and Hiseman) is an important archival find. The group never recorded: according to Lowther, “If you weren't a Dankworth or a Hayes, this was the norm. [In] those days nobody made records unless invited by a record company, very few people made records, and there's a mass of British jazz that was never recorded”. These two dates from what began as the Henry Lowther-Lyn Dobson Quintet fill a small corner of what has now become known as the ‘Golden' period of British jazz, and not without good reason as these recordings attest. The group was accomplished – “We practised together like it was a full-time job” – with Lowther in particular, fluent and assured on ‘Celebrity Stomp' while the title track, written by the quietly influential yet troubled pianist Mike Taylor, provides a powerful snapshot of the group ethos of this ensemble. Moving effortlessly between open and closed forms, they may have been waiting for the latest Miles release of the period, but this music has a distinct imprimatur of strong musical personalities doing things their way.
