There's a great spirit of fun on this disc from Hailey Brinnel, a young US vocalist, trombonist and arranger whose debut is a celebration of the splendours of jazz's early years (1920s to 1940s, essentially). Cole Porter's ‘Easy to Love’ is taken at quite a clip, with Brinnel – a 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition Finalist – scatting with brio in a sparring session with trumpeter Andrew Carson; the dipsomaniacal ‘What's the Use in Getting Sober’ features a splendid slurry solo from Brinnel on trombone; and the set ends with a swinging, singalongable (there's a shout of ‘Everybody now!’) ‘Show Me the Way to Go Home’. But Brinnel is capable of delivering surprises and quick shifts in mood: ‘You Go to my Head’, for instance, is a warmly romantic duet with guitarist Dariel Peniazek – a lovely moment of musical intimacy, and one of the highlights of a very enjoyable slice of nostalgic youthful exuberance.
