This is a significant supplement to the same label's previous Mobley set reviewed in Jazzwise 214. Whereas that compilation concentrated on his earliest sessions under his own name, three of the albums represented here are from the 1960-61 peak that saw him being hired by Miles. To be specific, the quartet session Soul Station (possibly his best ever), Roll Call (with Hubbard) and Workout (with Green) are excellent examples of his laidback-seeming but energetic approach, and the contributions of Blakey on the first two and Philly Joe on the third raise the temperature, as do Kelly and Chambers throughout all four sets. There is a problem, however, concerning this particular reissue – we used to complain about the sound on some older Avids (no longer a problem), but I believe this is the first time that tracks have been deliberately shortened to fit into the very generous playing-time. While Peckin' Time (with Morgan) and Soul Station are untampered with, eight out of 11 tracks from the other albums have their closing ensembles faded before completion. Obviously, Blue Note board-fades (from Jimmy Smith's The Sermon onwards) were a deliberate choice, but that's not the case here. What purports to be a reissue should surely include complete tracks, and it might have been better to omit a whole tune, rather than this compromise.
