This album, Hannah Horton’s second, was recorded in front of a live audience. It takes some guts to release a live selection where it’s harder to edit, and hence less room to hide. The repertoire is suitably varied: she mixes up the styles - a bit of funk here, a bit of swing there, and on Gil Evans’ ‘Las Vegas Tango’, a bit of… well, you get the idea.

In recent years the baritone has been largely relegated to the big band reeds section, so it’s refreshing to hear it out front as the lead instrument, Horton alternating between it and the tenor. One of the qualities of Live in Soho is that it not only features original tunes but existing compositions that are lesser-known: Chick Corea’s ‘Sea Journey’, with dazzling bass work from Statham, and the aforementioned ‘Las Vegas Tango’, adorned with Lapthorn’s rippling keys, being the standout examples. The most well-known tune, ‘Feed the Birds’ is rendered in an uplifting township-style 12/8, while ‘Keep Walking’ likewise struts along the street with determined optimism, enlivened by one of Horton’s most accomplished solos.

That’s really the story of the album as a whole - straightforward, bright and positive.
