Mabern, who turned 77 the week of this live recording, has matured into a convincing amalgam of Les McCann and McCoy Tyner – not so unlikely, if you think about it. These twin sources are echoed most noticeably in consecutively programmed versions of ‘Don't Get Around Much’ and ‘My Favorite Things’, the latter with an original interlude incorporating the ‘Giant Steps’ changes. His varied repertoire here encompasses an R&B hit (‘Dance With Me’) and a TV sitcom theme (‘Laverne And Shirley’), both dating from the 1970s. There's also a sense of humour behind the energetic grooving, which even extends to pre-arranged quotes from things as different as Freddie Hubbard's ‘Thermo’ and Quincy Jones's ‘Ai No Corrida’. Oh, and the ultra-fast ‘Cherokee’ dedicated to George Coleman goes through all 12 keys, at the rate of two per chorus. With Webber and Farnsworth providing suitably driving support, the fact that there's nothing ‘new’ here is put into perspective by much enjoyable listening.
