HBC sound like a dodgy bank (is there any other?) but this power trio needs little introduction: this is truly a troika of all that thunders. It's also rather wondrously the missing link between Ritchie Blackmore and Joe Zawinul, because the core of this release is a re-interpretation of Weather Report classics, plus a re-visit to Shorter's evergreen ‘Footsteps’. Henderson, much to his own relish, won't win any good taste competitions but he plays with an attack and lust for life that only the likes of Chambers could live with. And when they shove those power chords on to the epic drama of Zawinul's ‘Mysterious Traveller’ the band move with a tectonic scale that compares only with the likes of Led Zeppelin's ‘Kashmir’. Of course this will be sacrilege to devotees of the church of Charlie Christian (even if he did start this electric guitar malarkey) but as he demonstrates on ‘Footsteps’, Henderson can also play with a clean-limbed poise, with nary a ring modulator in sight. Now there's a relief.
