If the idea of free metal sounds like an interesting prospect, then hang on tight as Norwegian guitarist Hedvig Mollestad lets loose her latest blast of improvised guitar music. Assisted by bass player Ellen Brekken and power drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstadt, her playing on Black Stabat Mater hints at the down-tuned guitar style of Tony Iommi, while elsewhere paying homage to such masters of the instrument as Jimi Hendrix and John McLaughlin. This takes off on the Mahavishnu styled ‘On Arrival’ where the trio fuse together as one in a jam session that just keeps peaking. Elsewhere and ‘In The Court Of The Trolls’ Thomassen worries the opening riff like a terrier with a rat, before shaking it free and letting it slide into elongated feedback oblivion. Evil In Oslo captures the trio playing live renditions from their previous three albums, a full on head-charge of high-octane improvisation that mixes hard rock with jazz, lights it up and throws it against the wall.
