Lien is a formidably talented pianist who, like Tord Gustavsen before him, emerged from Silje Nergaard's backing band. His impressive debut on Ozella, Hello Troll, turned heads and sold well, though subsequently he seemed to be in ‘second book’ syndrome whereby a successful first novel isn't matched by what follows. But, as daily sports pages of the tabloids remind us, form is temporary, class is permanent, and with 2017's Guzuguzu he was back on track. Now comes this latest collection, with the eloquent bass of Mats Eilertsen, in the trio for the first time, combining with the ever tasteful Per Oddvar Johansen. It's surely the best album of Lien's career. Since 2008's Hello Troll has come maturity, a refinement of his considerable pianistic skills and a broadening of his talent. Evidence of this is provided over two CDs in this exemplary set, where given enough rope to hang himself, he leaves you wanting more.
