In terms of artwork, South Africa's answer to Abbey Road is poignant. The members of Heshoo Beshoo are seen crossing Armitage Road, a dirt track in the townships with low-grade accommodation on either side, while one of the group, 24 year-old guitarist Cyril Magubane, is in a wheelchair, a result of polio, reminding us of the poor healthcare given to Blacks under apartheid.
As oppressive as circumstances were in 1970, jazz groups in Orlando were still producing fine work, and saxophonist Henry Sithole's Heshoo Beshoo crafted a fantastically gritty, danceable sound that skillfully drew on the hard backbeat of American funk while retaining the swaying, breezy lyricism with which SA legends such as The Blue Notes are synonymous.
All the tunes have short and wonderfully sassy riffs that would make any dancefloor jump while satisfying listeners who appreciate ensemble dynamics, earthy harmonising and effective solos. Those of a certain generation will be intrigued by the presence of bassist Ernest Mothle, who would move to the UK and play with many other talented exiles such as Julian Bahula, Lucky Ranku, Dudu Pukwana and Chris McGregor.
