The 49-year-old Norwegian trumpeter, who spent the whole of the 1990s as a full-time member of Swedish Bohislan Big Band, has an interest in the ancient Bukkehorn, a goat’s horn from which she extracts an incredible degree of expression on the album’s title track. More significant is the influence it has had on her primal, vocalized sound on the trumpet and flugelhorn. Writing credits are shared equally between members of the band, and the leading Norwegian double bassist Mats Eilertsen and Jarrett-influenced pianist Espen Berg play exquisitely. As often is the case with acoustic jazz from Norway, it’s the group rather than the individual that counts. The warm yet dusky, unhurried collective spirit of the quartet draws from a latin and free- bop lineage, as well as honouring the Sami folk traditions of her homeland.
