The one Huntsville show I have seen live was dark, and late, and the chairs were cinema-comfy: but though the music was mesmeric, their set included occasional unexpected explosions that brought snoozing audience members back to their senses with a jolt. Past Increasing, Future Receding finds the Norwegian trio in another shadowy space: an Oslo Mausoleum lined with frescos by artist Emanuel Vigeland. Such conditions – coupled with the echoic potential of Vigeland's burial chamber – could hardly be more appropriate for three expansive, contemplative tunes rooted in drone and ambient but drawing too on jazz, post-rock and Americana. The result is cinematic and highly affecting – and, just as in the band's live set, the occasional depth charge detonation creates an appealing sense of unease. This is the group's fourth album, and their most monumental and assured epic to date: where The Necks meet Tortoise, Wilco, ambient Eno, Tim Hecker and In The Country.
