Saxophonist-producer Ersahin has been making headway with his self-started Nublu club scene in Manhattan for over a decade, bringing the music of his Turkish origins to bear on a multicultural mix that resonates deeply with New York's rich immigrant history. As one might expect, the sensual modes of his heartland are dominant and the combination of reeds, percussion and strings works well for the most part, with the latter element deployed in particularly swish voicings. As somebody plugged into contemporary club culture, Ersahin has willingly embraced electronica and house in the past, and the bass drum-led pulse of these genres powers some of this new material, which also benefits from the presence of stellar vocalists Birkin, Gil and the lesser-known Taner. At its highpoint the music alights organically on the glorious ‘ethio-jazz’ of Mulatu Astatke and the poise and pacing of Ersahin's solos are also a plus point. Yet, as good as the arrangements and performances are, the composing lacks the vital spark to take a good song to the level of an outstanding one. Ersahin has recorded a substantial amount of better material in the past, so this stands as a respectable rather than career-defining entry in a solid discography.
