Last year's sumptuous Rendell-Carr box set was a jewel in Jazzman's crown, but the leading reissue label and curator of obscure, essential independent black music continues to excel. This latest release is part of the ‘Holy Grail’ series, and it really does deserve that kind of billing. Helmed by pianist Soji Adebayo and percussionist Kahil El Zabar, currently enjoying long overdue exposure with the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Live Without Fear is a truly bewitching blend of fiery electric and earthy acoustic timbres that one would associate more with the beginning of the 1970s rather than the end of the decade – when it was actually recorded. Soji has an excellent touch on the Fender Rhodes, which glows around a steady rustle of percussion put into even sharper focus by the absence of a drum kit. With Henry Huff's soprano sax bringing streaks of light to the palette there is a distinct Pharoah Sanders/Lonnie Liston Smith resonance to a lot of the material, which was originally released on a single album with close to 30 minutes of music per side. Afro-centric chants and the occasional foray into roots reggae make for an even more personal take on spiritual jazz, a term bandied around a bit too casually these days but very apt for this heavenly session.
