Jaki's name is still strongly associated with his Mingus period (1962-65), but a recent Byard reissue (reviewed in Jazzwise 180) reminded us he was a powerful presence before then. And indeed afterwards, as this archive material shows. Following up two previous volumes from the same Keystone Korner gig, a 65-minute set provides further validation of his extraordinary executive prowess, as well as his vivid musical imagination. Covering everything from “classical” touches to virtuosic stride piano, and seemingly switching styles at a moment's notice, he puts most of today's eclectics to shame. A good example is his original ‘European Echoes’, a version of which was on his long-unreleased debut album Blues For Smoke, but which is also echoed in what he called ‘A.T.F.W.’ on appearances with Mingus (see Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65). There are also several standards here, including some he never recorded otherwise and, with trick voicings such as the beguiling ‘For All We Know’, he will startle even the most casual listener. Bits of banter with the audience are included, and icing on the cake is provided by Ethan Iverson's expert annotation.
