Another instalment of majestically ventilated minimalism courtesy of this wonderful Danish guitarist's trio. While their previous album on ECM – the bewitching Gefion – evaporated all-too quickly mid-flight in a series of languid moonlit fronds, Streams seems downright boisterous in comparison, flames recurrently flickering during extended passages of open improvisation before ebbing to a mantle of gently blushing embers. The addition to the group of drummer Joey Baron (who replaces previous percussionist Jon Christensen) has emancipated the still not-so-dynamic duo of Bro and Morgan, allowing them more openings in which to explore the colours of a compositional relationship that was already promising so much. Slow-motion medieval melodies wrap around Morgan's lyrical bass runs, evoking the rural Scandinavian stillness found within the writings of Tarjei Vesaas and Per Petterson, while reflecting the influence of Bro's former colleague, the late great Paul Motian. A simply stunning collection from one of the most brilliantly unassuming ensembles operating today.
