Here's a treat: Morton has been around far too long for someone so indecently young, with regular gigs with Pee Wee Ellis and Andy Sheppard to his credit. The influence of the former runs deep on this unpretentious but highly enjoyable organ-driven funk set. With no overdubs, vocals or indeed bass to thicken the mix, Morton and his sympathetic pals have space to lay down a deep funk that mainlines straight to head and heart. Any band that remembers that James Brown was also a fine organist can't go far wrong and Morton draws deep on those JB vibes on the likes of ‘Forgiven’, a classic funk ballad running at nearly nine minutes (with plenty of Hank Crawford in there too), the dance floor groover ‘The Hump’, and the Sanborn-esque ‘Sometimes Shit Just Goes Down Like That’. What's more Morton writes most of the material himself, with Ed Harris’ classic ‘Cold Duck Time’ the only non-original here. There's a sharp musical brain at work behind these grooves and Morton and co. deserve to go far. JTQ – Who they?
