All credit to Taylor as both musically and psychically he broadens his horizons with his most ambitious release yet. 2011's The Template set the tone for Taylor's fresh ambitions, showcasing his piano skills, moving away from the somewhat mislabelled ‘acid jazz’ grooves toward numbers with a wider harmonic sweep. Not that Closer To The Moon finds Taylor altogether changing his spots: ‘Fuzzburn’ is a dance floor killer of the old school, while the core band remains the same, although Yanney's vocals are largely in the background.
Instead, Taylor makes his vocal debut on the 1960s soaked vibe of ‘Closer To You’; a kind of Scott Walker meets R.D. Laing via John Barry meditation. There's also a fascination with classical music, replete with a Hammond-lush take on a Beethoven piano sonata; eat your heart out Procol Harum. There are times the whole edifice wobbles – Closer To The Moon, it is fair to say, feels like a very personal project for Taylor – but the guy's been out there entertaining the masses for decades so some self-indulgence is due.
