Garbarek's debut album is a holy grail among serious record collectors: the sole release organised by the Norwegian Jazz Federation, pressed in an edition of 500 and neither repressed nor reissued in any format since. Musically, it's a far cry from his misty embodiment of the ECM sound. Here, the 20-year old tenor upstart rips hungrily through two standards – Eddie Harris's ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’ and Coltrane's ‘Mr PC’ – transforming them into raw, fast, and viciously ragged free-bop. On both lengthy tracks, Garbarek snarls compact, pugilistic phrases, flipping every now and then into altissimo skronk, and goaded on by a tough rhythm section, with drummer Christensen on particularly garrulous form. The final, shorter title track (dedicated to his wife, Vigdis), is a calmer meditation with Garbarek smearing Ayler-ish slurs and moans over a thick arco bass drone. Now selling for ridiculous sums, the album remains a lost cornerstone of the European avant-garde.
Vinyl sold for $1,726 at ebay.com in October 2011.
