Swedish guitarist Schaffer is best known for his session work with ABBA but his little-known mid-1970s studio recordings made under his own name offer much more substantial fare, focusing on super tight instrumental funk-fusion that allows his phenomenal fret-wrangling skills to blaze forth. He's obviously open to the influences of his more famous peers: tracks like ‘Dr Abraham’, full of deliciously cramped clavinet, wouldn't sound out of place on Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow; while ‘Underhuggaren,’ with its rattling xylophone and pitch-bent Moog solo could be Roxy-era Zappa. Schaffer's soloing, too, shows some recognisable imprints, with more than a touch of Jerry Garcia's sky-high imagination. But there's plenty of his own personality here too – from the folkish prog of ‘Ugglor/Mossen’ with flitting flute and acoustic guitar, to tantalising vignettes such as ‘Luftlandsättning Avd. 60’, which rubs avant-garde scrabbling up against a deep funk vamp driven by obscenely fat bass. ‘Waterloo’ it ain't.
