Taped at Basin Street Records’ 20th anniversary party at the Little Gem club in New Orleans, this set shows Marsalis’ skills as a vibist (he was also of course drummer with his late father's groups) with his own quartet. The group play half-a-dozen of Marsalis’ compositions to considerable audience approval. If his first inspiration on vibes is clearly Milt Jackson, it's perhaps unsurprising then that the group's instrumentation is aligned to the that of the MJQ, this epitomised with ‘Passionate Dancer’ which has a solemn, ‘Django’-like feel. Each composition merits attention, often made with complex variations, as on the descending figure that returns throughout ‘Bourbon Street Ain't Mardi Gras’ with its notable vibes-drums interplay ebbing and flowing. Pianist Rossignoli, a new name to me, is a very positive factor here, improvising at speed, interpolating bluesy passages, somewhat on the lines of Oscar Peterson. There's real musical value here.
