As the title suggests, this album is inspired by the music of Miles Davis. But this is no pale imitation of the Miles sound. Instead, keyboardist producer Jason Miles (who worked on Tutu, Siesta and Amandla) and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen infuse the spirit of Miles with an array of melodies and grooves guaranteed to get your feet tapping. Opening with a nine-second interlude featuring solo trumpet with echoplex-like effects, the album moves smoothly into ‘The Faction of The Cool’, which has Jensen's open trumpet riding on top of a powerful bass groove and Miles' funky stabs on Fender Rhodes and organ. ‘Super City,’ is another funk track, this time dominated by Jensen's trumpet and Jay Rodriguez's baritone sax. The groove theme continues with tracks like ‘Ferrari’, ‘Kats Eye’ and ‘Street Vibe’, but it's not all funk. One of the standout tracks is ‘Shirley’ (dedicated to one of Miles Davis's favourite singers, Shirley Horn), a gem of a ballad that showcases Jensen's sublime trumpet playing. If you want to know what post-1980s Miles Davis might have sounded like, then the hard-edged ‘Close to the Action’ is probably the closest you'll get to it. This driving number sees Gene Lake and Amanda Ruzza laying down a powerful groove, over which Jensen's trumpet soars, and Rodriguez's bass clarinet weaves in and out. The album ends with two Miles Davis covers, ‘Sanctuary’ (one of three live tracks) and (an unlisted) nine-minute version of ‘Jean Pierre’.
