The tenor saxophonist matured during the 1980s renaissance in acoustic modern jazz, but cut his teeth with masters from an earlier age. And it is those masters who are the collective You of the album title. This well-crafted retrospective confirms Javon Jackson has compressed those experiences into a confident personal voice. The programme sticks to a theme-and-variations script, and the rhythm section is solid and in-style. Pianist Jeremy Manasia leans towards McCoy Tyner’s vamps and lines, while young drummer McClenty Hunter generates a propulsive modal swing. Jackson signals his saxophone lineage from the start with the mid-tempo ‘I’m Old Fashioned’, chosen, he says, because it was recorded by both Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. Here, it is Rollins’ harmonically rooted lyricism that most comes to mind as he un-picks the changes with a warm-centred tone. The original that follows, ‘My Man Hubbard’, unfolds over the loping polyrhythmic gait that Elvin Jones stoked up behind John Coltrane. That groove returns at a faster tempo on the closer, ‘88 Strong’, an original composition for McCoy Tyner, who like Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones, recorded and collaborated with Jackson. The modal influence surfaces in full on ‘Mr Sanders’, a homage to saxophonist Pharoah. Elsewhere, there are covers of Wayne Shorter’s ‘Backstage Sally’ and Cedar Walton’s ‘Holy Land’ and three originals, the waltz ‘Sun Up’, ‘Leila’, a ballad highlight and the riff-based ‘Native Sun’, written by bassist David Williams. Nice set.
