To these ears, fusion always seemed the squarest and least genuine of all the musical variations to evolve out of jazz. A super athletic, sports-music where stamina and technique superseded the primacy of heart and soul, one could almost imagine it being played by clean-living, clean-cut jocks in team colours. It's an image this young Danish quintet does little to dispel. Saxophonist Marius Neset and drummer Anton Eger also work together in Golden Xplosion – and the sound here follows a similar template of tricksy, tight and demanding jazz-rock licks played with blazing energy. Daniel Heløy Davidsen adds extra fire with electric guitar – but favours an approach more like Allan Holdsworth's fret-nastics than, say, the raw emotion of Hendrix. Overall, it works best when the band seems to worry less about breaking land-speed records and takes the time to build up some genuinely dramatic weight not unlike Norwegian nu-prog behemoth, Jaga Jazzist.
