Jeremy Pelt's latest album is a confident forward step from the tightly argued, urban-flavoured fusion jazz of Water and Earth. Once again, trumpeter Pelt and saxophonist Roxy Coss sound great together, are tight in the phrase and solo meaningfully – Coss’ sharp accented, acrossthe-pulse lines show a Wayne Shorter influence. And once again David Bryant provides layers of keyboards – Rhodes dominates, but organ, piano and synth are in the mix – in a rhythm section driven by Dana Hawkins’ chatter and clatter drums. But a year on, there is greater confidence in the delivery, and the compositions are more closely structured. The core vibe neatly balances free-flowing improv, seriously funky contemporary beats and the dense textures of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band. Vocal tracks change pace, and both Fabiana Masisli – a wordless colour on ‘Princess Charlie’, pure and poignant with harp and cello on ‘Rastros’ – and Milton Suggs – tender, rich and clean on the short ‘Verse’ – enhance a very good album.
