Jeremy Pelt's latest CD turns from the free-flowing exuberance of his highly-praised acoustic quintet to a loose-limbed keyboard-heavy jam featuring largely unknown players. Pelt's wistful, downbeat melodies with their obliquely harmonised tone centres and stripped-down beats, have a nice underground feel and when the band is on song, solos to match. Pelt, the main force, is never less than solid, his acoustic tone round and firm, and his use of mutes and effects are edgy and unsettling rather than romantic. And Roxy Coss is an OK foil on sax.
The band is at its best playing stripped down urban funk and electric-Miles-styled ballads. Here the two keyboard players couple Hammond B3 and Fender Rhodes, acoustic piano and Prophet synth into an unfurling swirl of sound, punctuated by the broken beat rattles of drummer Dana Hawkins. They need two tracks to warm up, but by ‘In Dreams’ they're in full cry. The vocal ‘Stay’ is recommended and ‘Prior Convictions’ and ‘Butterfly Dreams’ are standouts.
