Violist Jessica Pavone is arguably best known for her duos with pitch-shifting guitarist Mary Halvorson, where the pair – both former students of Anthony Braxton – flay the flesh from the dying corpse of indie rock and contour it around the spikey frame of free improvisation. That stuff's a real prick in the balloon of post-jazz pomposity, but this pithy solo set is more sobering. Pavone's dedication to the drawn-out drone might have its roots in Aaron Copland's all-American fanfares and Charles Ives’ ‘The Unanswered Question’, but the stark, minimalist beauty of these pieces draws closer comparison to the hillbilly hoedowns of Henry Flynt and the extended bowed workouts of Tony Conrad. As with the music of all these forbears, there's a pervasive folk feel underpinning Silent Spills, seasoned by the inclusion of Pavone's genial Shirley Collins-meets-Kim Gordon utterances on ‘Dawn to Dark’. This pure form rootsiness makes these ostensibly cold cuts easier to embrace. Tones for the masses, people.
