The uniqueness of this terrific second CD from Swedish vocalist Jessica Pilnäs, a homage to the singer and songwriter Peggy Lee, is the way it plays with texture and space. This is best exemplified in ‘Smile’, a song that's been so done to death that my heart sank when I spotted it on the track list. Here, though, the icy string harmonics of the Fleshquartet coupled with Karl Olandersson's atmospheric trumpet work cast it in an entirely new light.
Similarly on ‘There'll Be Another Spring’, the album's singular instrumentation of vibes, trumpet and bass – complemented by the most delicate textural layers in the quartet – serves to highlight Pilnäs’ beautifully controlled vocals. Great soloing here, too, from vibist Mattias Ståhl. Elsewhere, in addition to the obligatory ‘Fever’, there's a sultry ‘Do I Love You’, the most ethereal versions of ‘It Never Entered My Mind’ and ‘What's New’ imaginable, and a terrific take on ‘The Gold Wedding Ring’ in which Pilnäs miraculously sustains the melodic line.
