Rotondi, of course, is a founder member of the One For All group and his latest Criss Cross date utilises OFA's rhythm section, with Ralph Bowen (now his fellow faculty member at Rutgers University) and Mike DiRubbo in for Eric Alexander and Steve Davis. It's one of the most effortless and relaxed albums of recent months, despite most of the tempos being considerably ‘up’. The way in which they charge through often difficult changes makes it all sound so easy, when it obviously isn't! The overall horn sound is very much in the One For All vein and all three front-line soloists are in top form. But the scene-stealer must be David Hazeltine, who always plays well, but here is exceptionally good. Check out the beginning of his solo on Bowen's tune ‘Blues for KD’ (which isn't a conventional blues and which isn't dedicated to Kenny Dorham, but bassist Kenny Davis). It brings back flashes of Wynton Kelly at his very nimble best and there's a loving dedication to Mr Walton called simply ‘For Cedar’. Hazeltine, Webber and the in-demand Farnsworth really breathe as one these days and the swing they generate together is a highlight of a thoroughly enjoyable session. Rotondi brought in two originals, Hazeltine, DiRubbo (a credit to his tutor Jackie McLean) and Bowen one apiece. Then there's a seldom-heard Horace Silver piece (‘Progress’) plus three standards, of which ‘Too Late Now’ is the most enjoyable.
