Jim Snidero's previous release, 2019's Waves of Calm, was inspired by his father's fight against Parkinson's disease. The mix of deeply personal originals and sublimely played ballads was highly praised, but Covid-19 put touring on hold, and live gigs of any description became a celebratory event. One such gig, captured here, featured Snidero leading a feisty quartet in front of a live audience at Delaware's Deer Park Inn.

Not surprisingly, the American saxophonist turns to familiar standards – “comfort food” he calls them on the album's sleeve – and, equally understandably given months of isolation, it takes a couple of numbers for the one-off band to hit their stride. But pianist Orrin Evans is on form from the off, and once the band catch fire, they never look back.

Parker's ‘Now's the Time' is the opener, and then a loping ‘Autumn Leaves'. Snidero's rounded tone, poised phrasing and fluency are all intact and Peter Washington and Joe Farnsworth the experienced swinging bass and drums support. But it is a brilliant re-working of ‘Ol' Man River', dedicated to Black Lives Matter, that catches the set alight. Unfolding just above ballad tempo over sparse Washington bass, Snidero and Evans deliver strong emotions with a delicate touch. From then on, the highlights keep on coming. ‘Bye Bye Black Bird' and ‘Who Can I Turn To' are mid-tempo romps, the ballad ‘My Old Flame' is beautifully played and Grant Green's ‘Idle Moments' smoulders. The set ends joyfully with ‘Yesterdays', the band uptempo and Snidero channelling Adderley to the max.
