The New York altoist's 20th release is as direct and muscular as ever, and with a fine, integrated and like-minded band. The title-track opens things in particularly fidgety form, and the soloists, Snidero, Sipiagin and Laverne, each worry away at the knotty theme in their solos. ‘Recursion’ relaxes a little into a jazz waltz but keeps the restless feel, the leader quoting from ‘Footprints’ on entry to his solo, Laverne nodding to McCoy Tyner in his comping. ‘Free Beauty’ loosens the rhythmic pulse still further and becomes a fine example of group interplay within a free-ish structure. ‘Who We've Known’ and Miles' ‘Blue In Green’ are the ballads, the latter reducing the band to a saxophone/piano/bass trio with a catchy four-note motif underpinning some lyrical playing from the leader. The fidgets return in the closer, ‘Purge’, complete with a suitably cathartic drum solo. Miles' principle of fighting complacency at every turn is the abiding guide for Jim Snidero.
