This is a reissue and a half, comprising two German radio concerts as originally issued on Hatology back in the 1990s. The difference is that Martin Davidson's new edition includes several additional tracks from Bremen, mainly consisting of titles that were performed in Stuttgart too, but also the unexpected discovery of three rather more conventional duo items by Bley and Swallow. And, as a further bonus, there are two studio tracks from six months earlier that should be but aren't on the ECM reissue (facilitated by Bley?) Jimmy Giuffre 1961, which combined the albums Fusion and Thesis. Clearly this makes a fairly essential acquisition for those who admire this period of Giuffre's work. Others who never totally warmed to the musician, who went from ‘Four Brothers’ (for Woody Herman) to his own pseudo-folk ‘Train And The River’, might find this percussion-less attempt at something more ‘free’ a bit harder to take. The New Yorker magazine's recent description (of the folk piece, btw!) as being “dessicated academicism” seems to fit rather well here too.
