Jimmy Greene's daughter Ana, then aged 6, was one of the 26 students and staff killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shootings. Greene documented his response to that event with the elegiac multi-genre album Beautiful Life. Volume 2, titled Flowers, celebrates his late daughter's sense of mischief and love of dancing and laughter with optimistic themes and the two high-calibre rhythm sections he takes on tour. The programme opens with the twisty melodies and jaunty rhythms of ‘Big Guy’, the greeting Ana gave to her father, and continues with the up-tempo samba ‘Stanky Leg’. As the set progresses, the wistful vocal folk-meets-soul of ‘Flowers’ is followed by crunchy jazz rock and the second-line strut of ‘Stink Thumb’, composed to reference Greene's eight years with Harry Connick Jnr., as well as his daughter's willpower to conquer her thumb-sucking habit. There's a self-penned ballad featuring Jean Baylor vocals and wispy tenor sax, latin jazz is referenced and the up-tempo closer, ‘Thirty-two’ is tightly argued funk. Greene, a solid saxophonist and composer, neatly draws out the contrasts between a rhythm-section based on the precision of Ben Williams and Otis Brown and one driven by the fire and finesse of John Patitucci and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts. Renee Rosnes and Kevin Hays are likeminded keyboard players, and three tracks get extra oomph from Mike Moreno's guitar. Nice set, neatly programmed and with the loose-limbed feel of a live gig.
