A sister release to Charles McPherson's CD that bears the same title. This is indeed the same band minus McPherson and pianist Barry Harris, and it does not suffer in the pared-down setting, primarily because Raney is an excellent bebop soloist and Jones and Williams are accompanists with a consummate grip on the art of swing. Without piano, the group has a very limpid, spacious sound that brings into sharp focus every wily passing comment from the drums and bass on the leader's melodic and rhythmic statements, and the music really ‘breathes’. As is to be expected, the repertoire is standards-based and the renditions of ‘Cherokee’, ‘Just Friends’ and ‘Anthropology’ will delight those who worship at the altars of the two saint Charlies, Christian and Parker. Having said that, the subtle way swish bossa nova influences permeate the fine take on Michel Legrand's ‘Watch What Happens’ also serves as a reminder of the broadening of 1950s modern jazz born on American shores into a more global musical vocabulary.
